Following an almighty row, Gillian stands up to her abusive boyfriend. The consequences are horrendous and far-reaching.
Terrified, she flees her home, seeking anonymity abroad while coming to terms with the outcome of her actions.
In Portugal, Gillian meets Harry, a yachtsman. Needing crew for his Atlantic Ocean-crossing she applies for the job. Half-way into the journey, after confessing to her crime, Harry offers her refuge on an uninhabited island in the Caribbean which he says he owns.
Confused and depressed, Gillian imagines this is the answer to her problems. She needs time to lie low and consider her options; confront the authorities or live in obscurity? Harry is offering the perfect hiding place…or is he?
When things start going horribly wrong, she asks herself if she is alone on the island. But maybe the biggest question of all is why she gets the gut feeling Harry wants to keep her there at all costs? What happens when she says … no.
Gillian Hodges has not had the best of lives. Raised by strict religious parents, she was bullied by her father and now appears to have been drawn into another controlling relationship with Lawrence. Lawrence is a brute who is jealous, domineering and abusive. When tragedy strikes Gillian knows she will be blamed so helped by her friend Bex, escapes abroad.
In Portugal she meets Harry whose 40 foot yacht White Lady is moored in the marina. He offers her passage to Antigua but before they sail Theo, an old friend of his, joins them. Theo recognises Gillian from the papers and soon Harry is aware of the real reason she’s on his yacht. When Harry confronts Gillian with this knowledge he persuades her to house sit for a few weeks on a small island he owns. She’ll be safe there, he reassures her, and no one will find her.
Part way through their Atlantic crossing Theo is washed overboard during the night. But was it an accident or did someone push him? And if the latter was it Harry or Gillian? Arriving at the island, Gillian settles in but it’s soon apparent her stay is not a short term one; she has been deliberately marooned there. And not only that Harry, far from being her saviour, is amusing himself playing malicious mind games with her. It seems she has swapped one monster for another.
To call this ‘a gripping psychological thriller’ is an understatement. The story held me from beginning to end. If you like edge of your seat stuff then this is definitely for you.
